Climb Mount Everest (or at least visit Base Camp)

On the border between Tibet and Nepal stands the world's highest mountain, Mount Everest. Trivia quiz fans will know that its summit is 8,848m or 29,028 feet above see level. The first successful ascent of Everest was by New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay from Nepal on the 29th of May, 1953, and by the end of the 2007 climbing season a total of just 3,679 ascents to the summit had been completed by 2,436 individuals.

Have you ever climbed Ben Nevis? If so we would love to hear all about your experiences (perhaps with a photo or two). You can send them to us by email and we will use them on the website whenever possible.

he popular Discovery Channel series follows the exploits of 12 amateur climbers in their attempt to climb the World s highest peak. The film was shot during the second deadliest climbing season on Mt Everest and in an unprecedented move cameras were strapped to the Sherpa s helmets to record nearly every step or misstep. The resulting footage provided viewers with a real sense of what it takes to conquer the world s most formidable peak. Production Facts: A 17-person production team used state-of-the art technology to capture the saga. During the filming, two of the crew members reached the summit and two others entered the 'Death Zone'. Every member of the crew lost a substantial amount of weight. The record loss was soundman Jake Drake-Brockman, who lost 18% of his body weight.

Climbing Mount EverestThe fact that so few people have actually made it to the top of the world underlines how difficult it is to climb to the top of Everest. Indeed, a sobering statistic is that there have been 210 climber deaths on the mountain.

If climbing Mount Everest is on your list of things to do before you die, you will need to be physically fit for the huge challenge ahead and have had mountaineeering experience.

You will also need deep pockets - the permit alone to climb Everest will cost you US$10,000 and once you factor in travel, accomodation, equipment and the cost of guides (sherpas) you will be looking at £15,000 for even a basic expedition.

As an alternative to climbing Mount Everest, joining an escorted trip to Base Camp might fit the bill. Sherpa Expeditions offer 18 day escorted trekking in Khumbu, taking you in the footsteps early mountaineering expeditions, walking up the valley of the Dudh Kosi, then heading up to Namche, on to Pangboche and finally to the amazing Khumbu Glacier and Everest Base Camp.

After two days in Kathmandu, you get to experience the breathtaking views on the flight to Lukla before starting the trek. During the first few days you will visit Namche Bazaar, Thame and arguably the most spectacular viewpoint in the world at Thyangboche Monastery.

Day stages are planned with a couple of two night stops allowing excursions to higher ground to aid acclimatisation.

The climax of the trek is to ascend to Base Camp or take the alternative option and ascend Kala Pattar for the best views of Everest, the Khumbu Glacier and surrounding peaks. Visit the Sherpa Expeditions website for more details and 2008-2009 dates.
