Being a cowboy or a cowgirl for a week or two on a real working ranch can be an amazing experience - for all the family. And the good news is that there are plenty of ranching holidays available across North America, with something for everyone.
First things first. If you've never riden before - not a problem! Nearly all ranches offer riding lessons for beginners through to experienced horseriders and you will be amazed how quickly you will come on because you'll be riding almost every day of your holiday.
What's more, trails to suit all levels of riding ability will be on offer at your chosen ranch. So whether it's a gentle one hour amble or a five hour working ride, you'll be well looked after by your guides.
For the more experienced rider, you can get a real taste of bygone North merica by going on a cattle drive! Again, various options will be available depending on which holiday you choose.
You can also get involves in the working day or a ranch by helping out with rounding-up, roping and even branding cattle. And you should come away knowing how to use a lassoo!
Accommodation at ranches tends to be in cabins or bunkhouses, although if you are going on an overnight ride, chances are you will be sleeping under canvas - or maybe even in an Indian wigwam! And since most cabins will have private bathrooms, air conditioning and other luxuries, you'll be well looked after.
And at the end of a hard day's work, there's nothing better than sitting in a rocking chair on the ranch porch, relaxing with your fellow cowboys as you tuck into a barbeque American style.
