Britain's Best Fish And Chip Shop

According to the Sea Fish Industry Authority (Seafish for short), one in six of us can’t resist tucking into fish and chips at least once a week. And with 283 million single fish and fish suppers sold in fish and chip shops every year, it’s hardly surprising that the traditional dish of fish and chips is still the number one fast food in Britain.

 

Cod served in a crisp batter is the most popular fish sold in fish and chip shops, accounting for three quarters of all fish sold, followed by haddock. Add a golden portion of fried chips, sprinkle on your salt and vinegar, and there you have it. The perfect fish and chips.

Every year, Seafish organises a competition to find the best chippie out of the 8,500 fish and chip shops in the UK. All fish and chip shops are invited to enter, with customers voting for their favourite.

Ten chip shops with the most votes in each of 19 regions are then visited over a seven week period by mystery judges, who score them on a variety of factors including the quality of their products, customer service, working practices, hygiene standards and overall presentation.

The winner from each region then goes forward into another round of judging with a final ten chosen to enter the final where a panel of industry experts chooses the Fish And Chip Shop Of The Year.

Voting in this year’s competition is already underway, with the winner being announced at the start of next year.

The current holder of the coveted title of Fish And Chip Shop Of The Year is Hodgson's Chippy of 96 Prospect Street, Lancaster (Tel: 01524 67763).

Second place went to Andy’s Fish Bar, 53-55 Market Street, Church Gresley, Swadlincote (Tel: 01283 224761), and third place to McDermott’s Fish & Chips, 6 The Forestdale Centre, Featherbed Lane, Addington, Croydon (Tel: 020 8651 1440).
