Visit The Iguassu Falls on the border of Brazil and Argentina

The Iguassu Falls on the border between Brazil and Argentina are truly one of nature's wonders. They dwarf North America's Niagra Falls in size and sheer volume of water and offer better views and access than South Africa's Victoria Falls. As waterfalls go, Iguassu is hard to beat.

Iguassu FallsThe Iguassu Falls consist of 275 falls along almost 3km (1.67 miles) of the Iguazu River. The majority are around 65m in height (210 fet), but some are up to 82m (269 feet) tall.

Most impressive of all is The Devil's Throat (Garganta do Diabo to the Portuguese-speaking Brazilians, The Garganta del Diablo to the Spanish speak Argentinians). It is U-shaped, 150m wide and 700m long, and the roar and spray are incredible.

From the Argentinian side, there is a free train running up to a kilometre long walkway across the river where you can stand just back from the main horseshoe of The Devil's Throat. From the Brazilian side you can get an excellent overview of The Devil's Throat and the rest of the Iguassu Falls from both above and below.

Whichever side of the border you are on, wear waterproofs and make sure cameras and camcorders are protected!

You can take boat trips under the falls and there are other water-borne activities available in the area including whitewater rafting. There are also plenty of restaurants within hearing distance of the falls.

The city on the Brazilian side is called Foz do Iguaçu and it is bigger and less attractive than its Argentinian neighbour, the town of Puerto Iguazu. Border crossings between the two countries is fairly relaxed and common for tourists to do. It's usually done by bus or taxi.

Foz do Iguaçu can be reached by domestic flights to Iguazu Falls Cataratas International Airport from Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and other cities. Puerto Iguazu is served by Aeropuerto International Cataratas del Iguaçu which has flights to Buenos Airies. The Falls are also very close to the Paraguayan border town of Ciudad del Este which you can reach by bus from the city of Asuncion.
