BBC 50 Places To See Before You Die

Get up close and personal with Africa's wildlife while on safari

Think about all those old movies you used to watch with the big game hunters tracking down huge wild animals all over the world, especially in Africa. I bet you were just like many others and wished you could do the same. Well, you can enjoy several different safaris’ without the hunting aspect. Many of the safaris of today are designed for watching and photographing big game and other wildlife in their natural habitat.

Have you ever been on safari? If so we would love to hear all about your experiences (perhaps with a photo or two). You can contact us via our contact page.

Tiger On A Safari

Consider being out in the bush wearing khaki clothing, belted bush jackets, slouch hats, and animal skins to blend in with the surroundings so the wild animals do not see you and run for shelter.

In most cases, African safaris will take you on an adventure in a safari vehicle so you can get very up close and personal to all the wonderful animals of the area.

Most African safaris can take you through an area where animals are not yet afraid of man and do not mind the occasional vehicle riding through their territory. You will need to listen to your guide, as there will be areas where you cannot just jump out of the vehicle and mingle with the wildlife. On the other hand, there are areas where you can get out and walk amongst animals in their natural habitat.

Before you decide which safari you would enjoy the most, you have to realise there are many different types available. The most popular types of safaris found in East Africa include Balloon Safari, Camel Safari, Camping Safari, Climbing or Trekking, Coastal Safaris, Cultural Safari, Fishing Safari, Flying Safari, Lodge Safari, Mixed Lodge and Camping Safari, Ornithologial Safari, Rafting Safari, Scuba Diving Safari, and Walking Safari.

All of these safaris are just as exciting as they sound.

However, once you choose what type of safari you desire, then you must decide what area of East Africa you want to explore.

Just look at what a Balloon Safari has to offer: 3 hours over the Great Rift Valley, one-hour hot air balloon safari over the plains and riverine forest of Masai Mara Game Reserve, or a one-hour hot air balloon ride over the Serengeti Plains. Balloon Safaris mix the wonderful feeling of freedom with the beauty of wildlife in their natural habitat.

You may wish to have a longer safari such as the Camel Safari, Camping Safari, or one with a bit more excitement such as Rafting Safari or Scuba Diving Safari.

With a Camel Safari, you can choose from a variety of locations such as 3 nights and 4 days in Laikipia or 6 nights and 7 days in and around the Ndoto Mountains and Matthews Mountains in Kenya.

A safari is a once in a lifetime experience for many, however, once you make the decision and go on your first safari, you will more than likely desire to go on many more.
