Formally opened on the 19th of March 1932, The Sydney Harbour Bridge is the widest long-span bridge and the highest steel arch bridge in the world, with the top of the bridge standing 134m (430ft) above the harbour. Along with the Sydney Harbour Tunnel, it connects Sydney's Central Business Districtwith the North Shore.
As well as eight lanes of road traffic on its main roadway (including two former tram tracks), the bridge has a footpath for pedestrians on its Eastern side, two railway tracks and a bicycle path along its Western side. But if you really want to experience the bridge (and see the city in all its glory), don't just cross it - climb it!
Since 1998, BridgeClimb has made it possible for tourists to climb the southern half of the bridge. Climbers can choose between two three and a half hour guided experiences - The Bridge Climb or The Discovery Climb and both are available at Dawn, Day, Twilight or Night.
The Bridge Climb is the original experience. It takes you along catwalks, up ladders, and to the summit of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. When you reach the upper arch of the Bridge you will have panoramic views of the city including the World Heritage listed Sydney Opera House, the harbour and of course the Bridge itself beneath your feet.
The Discovery Climb is slightly different in that it takes you inside the workings of the Sydney Harbour Bridge for a behind-the-scenes look at this Australian icon. You will be led to the summit upon the suspension arch of the Bridge, winding around structural elements and climbing upon steep staircases that join the two arches.
You will be provided with protective clothing appropriate to the prevailing weather conditions and are given an hour long orientation before climbing so that you can get a feel for the conditions on the Bridge on a Climb Simulator.
Afraid of heights? You will be made very welcome indeed! All of the Climb Leaders are specifically trained to care for climbers with a fear of heights and you will be supported all the way to the top. In fact BridgeClimb says it has helped thousands of people overcome their fear of heights.
Children have to be at least ten years old
before being allowed to climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge, but otherwise there is no age limit. All that is required is that you fit enough to sustain moderate physical exertion for 3½ hours over 1.75km.
No personal items can be taken on the Bridge and that includes cameras. Your Climb Leader will take a group photo at the top and you will be presented with a complimentary copy at the end. Additional photos are taken and these can be purchased at the end of your climb.
You will also need to wear rubber soled sports or hiking shoes - leather soled shoes are not permitted.
The cost of the climb is Aus$179 to Aus$295, depending on the time of day and the day of the week. Prices also rise during the July peak season.
The climbs are very popular so book at least two weeks in advance - and if your time in Sydney is limited, book even earlier to ensure your place.
