Trek through a rainforest

If you want to go trekking through a rainforest, you might as well make it THE rainforest. And they don't come any bigger than the Amazon Rainforest which covers 1.4 billion acres of land in South America, straddling the borders of nine countries as it does so. In fact the Amazon represents over half of the planet's remaining rainforests and is the largest and most species-rich area of tropical rainforest in the world.

The Amazon Rainforest is so huge that it covers around 40% of South America. Visit Colombia, Peru, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname, or French Guiana and you may well be able to trek through part of the Amazon Rainforest, but 60% of it is found in Brazil so we will start there.

Amazonas is not only the largest state in Brazil, but 98% of it is covered in rainforest! Its capital is Manaus, a cosmopolitan port and gateway to the Amazon for many a tourist. Manaus is best reached by plane with domestic and international flughts available to its Eduardo Gomes International Airport.

From Manaus, there are plenty of boat and land trips into the surrounding rainforest. In fact there are a large number of hotels and lodges in the rainforest itself where you can find a base from which to explore the surrounding forests.

One such hotel is the Tropical Manaus Eco Resort, arguable Brazil's finest. It is located in the heart of the Amazon Forest, on the banks of the Negro River, and yet is just 16km from Manaus and even closer to the airport. It has 588 apartments and superb leisure facilities.

Nature is the big attraction of course and the Amazon Rainforest certainly doesn't disappoint. 10% of all the world's known species are found there, including 2.5 million types of insect and one in five of all the birds in the world. To date over 40,000 plant species have been identified - the highest diversity of plant species on Earth.

Another interesting option is to make a trek through the Amazon part of a trip to Peru. Here tours combine trekking through the Amazon rainforest with hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.
