Scare Yourself Silly In The Underground Vaults Of Auld Reekie
Underneath the 19 enormous arches of Edinburgh’s South Bridge lies a dark, quiet, almost forgotten network of underground vaults that have been described as “possibly the most haunted place in Britain”. Once home to cellars, businesses and workshops, this subterranean world was abandoned almost two hundred years ago and only rediscovered in 1985.

Which begs the question - dare you venture into the candle-lit vaults to be told dark secrets and creepy tales by your guide from Mercat Tours (0131 557 6464)? If so, as you venture deeper into the bowels of Auld Reekie, you will hear accounts that range from the eerie to the terrifying, the strange to the inexplicable. Certainly not for the faint of heart, the good news is that if you hold onto someone’s hand tightly you should be fine. And Mercat Tours always try to leave the vaults with the same number of people they took in. The 60 minute tour takes place twice a day during the summer (April to September), departing at 5pm and 6pm, and on Friday and Saturday only at 6pm during the winter (October to March) - meet at the Mercat Cross on the High Street 15 minutes before the departure time. Tickets cost £6.50 for adults and £3.00 for children and booking in advance is strongly recommended and numbers are limited to 25 people per tour. |
