Scare Yourself Silly In The Underground Vaults Of Auld Reekie

Underneath the 19 enormous arches of Edinburgh’s South Bridge lies a dark, quiet, almost forgotten network of underground vaults that have been described as “possibly the most haunted place in Britain”. Once home to cellars, businesses and workshops, this subterranean world was abandoned almost two hundred years ago and only rediscovered in 1985.

Below Scotland's capital, hidden for almost two centuries, there lies a metropolis whose very existence was forgotten until recently. For almost 200 years Edinburgh was surrounded by a giant defensive wall. Unable to expand its boundaries, it became the most densely populated city in Europe. The towering tenements of the Royal Mile were a direct result of this massive overpopulation and, when the city buildings couldn't get any higher, people were forced to construct new edifices over what was already there. An underground slum developed which existed for over 350 years. This work chronicles Edinburgh's secret city: its history and structure; its inhabitants and the lives they led; the story of its rediscovery; the amazing tales, both ancient and modern, that made it legendary; the areas where it existed; and where to find the parts that remain.

Spooky Tours In The Haunted Vaults Of EdinburghSince the reopening of the vaults to the general public, hundreds of souls who have walked through them have experienced ghostly encounters. Spooky goings on aplenty.

Which begs the question - dare you venture into the candle-lit vaults to be told dark secrets and creepy tales by your guide from Mercat Tours (0131 557 6464)?

If so, as you venture deeper into the bowels of Auld Reekie, you will hear accounts that range from the eerie to the terrifying, the strange to the inexplicable.

Certainly not for the faint of heart, the good news is that if you hold onto someone’s hand tightly you should be fine. And Mercat Tours always try to leave the vaults with the same number of people they took in.

The 60 minute tour takes place twice a day during the summer (April to September), departing at 5pm and 6pm, and on Friday and Saturday only at 6pm during the winter (October to March) - meet at the Mercat Cross on the High Street 15 minutes before the departure time. Tickets cost £6.50 for adults and £3.00 for children and booking in advance is strongly recommended and numbers are limited to 25 people per tour.
