Enjoy Strawberries And Cream At Wimbledon

The Lawn Tennis Championships at Wimbledon are the spiritual home of tennis, attracting players from over 60 countries and more than half a million spectators every year to the leafy London suburb. Many come in hope of British success, but if and when the last homegrown player bows out, there is always a famous bowl of Wimbledon strawberries and cream to console ourselves with.

Have you been to Wimbledon or are you planning to go soon? If so we would love to hear all about your experiences (perhaps with a photo or two). You can contact us via our contact page.

Tennis At Centre Court WimbledonTickets for Wimbledon, and particularly the big matches on Centre Court, are like gold dust, but perhaps surprisingly Wimbledon remains one of very few major sporting competitions anywhere in the world that reserves tickets for sale on the day.

About 500 are available to buy at the turnstiles for the Centre Court (except for the last four days), and the same number are available for both Court One and Court Two.

And in addition, approximately 6,000 ground tickets are also available each day, depending on how many people are already inside, and can be used in Court Two’s standing enclosure, as well as in the unreserved seating and standing on Courts 3 to 19.

There is also a giant screen showing action from the Centre Court for those on Aorangi Terrace (or Henman Hill as it’s now known) where you can eat at one of several restaurants, enjoy a homemade picnic, and of course buy those strawberries and cream!

The Lawn Tennis Championships at Wimbledon start every year six weeks before the first Monday in August and last approximately two weeks. This year Wimbledon starts on Monday the 23rd of June 2008, with play scheduled to start on Centre and No. 1 Courts at 1.00p.m. for the first 11 days and at 2.00p.m. on finals days. On all other courts the start of play is scheduled for midday for at least the first eight days and 11.00a.m. for Junior matches on the middle Saturday and during the second week.

To gain entry on the day, you will need to join the queue (there is always a queue for Wimbledon tickets!) at Gate Three. Day tickets are only available through Gate Three with two queues - one from the north, the other from the south - having an equal number of tickets available. The Gate opens at 10.00am each day and ticket prices increase as the tournament progresses.

Centre Court tickets start at £38 on the first Monday and rise to £65. Court Two tickets vary between £29 and £38 depending on the day. Ground tickets cost £20 and decrease as the tournament progresses right down to £5. You can also get reduced price ground ticket entry after 5pm and if you are really just interested in the strawberries and cream, go after 8pm and admission is free.

One very important footnote. All tickets have to be paid for with cash. Credit cards and debit cards are not accepted.

For more details visit the official Wimbledon website or phone 020 8971 2473. The Lawn Tennis Club has also appointed two official resellers of ticket and hotel packages, Keith Prowse (020 8795 2222) and Sportsworld Group (telephone 01235 555844).
