The Yosemite National Park forms part of the Sierra Mountains range in California and is one of the most beautiful places on Earth, let alone the United States.
Despite covering
1,200 square miles, most of its 3.5 million visitors every year will see the same 12 square miles of the Yosemite Valley.
The Yosemite Valley is a beautiful place, but during the summer especially it can become very crowded.
The most famous sight in the valley is the Half Dome, a granite mountain whose sheer face and rounded top gives it the appearance of a giant stone dome that has been split in half.
Equally impressive are the Yosemine Falls, the highest in North America and most imprssive during the Spring. The Lower Yosemite Fall is a short walk from the shuttle bus stop provides a good view of the falls with a close-up view of the lower fall (it can dry up in August through to October).
To really take in the sheer beauty of the Valley, look at it from above. Head for Glacier Point (July to October is best because of snowfalls during the other months) from where you will enjoy breathtaking views of Yosemite Valley, Half Dome and much of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. The road ends at Glacier Point and a quarter mile long paved walkway leads you to one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the park.
The Yosemite is also home to some of the world's most beautiful meadows including Tuolumne Meadows, a large sub-alpine meadow surrounded by majestic peaks and domes.
There are countless trails for all levels of walkers as well as opportunities for rock climbing, horse riding, skiing and even golf in the Yosemite National Park. It's certainly not best experienced in a day so make the most of your entrance pass which is valid for seven days.
There are plenty of places to eat and stay in the Park itself, although if you are looking for accommodation during the peak season it is best to book in advance. The nearby towns of El Portal, Mariposa, Fish Camp, and Lee Vining offer easy access to the Park and often cheaper accommodation options.
Weather can change rapidly during any time of the year so dress accordingly. Layers of clothing with waterproofs on hand is good advice. The rainy (snowy) season is January to March, but storms are common during the spring and autumn and you may well experience some spectacular thunderstorms if you visit during the summer.
